BURRTON—Right before Christmas, teachers at USD 369 in Burrton had a competition to see who could bring the most nonperishable items in to help the local food bank.

Fifth grade teacher Maranda Matlack took the contest a step further.

“I asked students in my class to also bring in donations,” she said. “We have been reading the book Wonder, and my goal was to show the kids how you can show kindness in the smallest ways.”

One of Matlack’s students, Sophie Faidley, stepped up by using her own money to purchase 60 items for the local food bank.

“I want to help people who can’t afford stuff,” Faidley said.  Last year, she helped collect coats, hats and mittens for those less fortunate in Burrton.

Faidley said she earned the money helping her great grandmother.

“Sophie goes above to show such generosity,” Matlack said.
