BENTLEY—Residents of Bentley know good chili when they taste it.

Last Saturday at the Bentley Eagle Senior Center’s annual chili cook-off, one of the entrants was Larry Bulla, who has won numerous awards across the country for his chili. He’s made it to the finals of national and world chili competitions, been featured on the Food Network and belongs to the International Chili Society. Bulla’s chili has also won awards in Wichita competitions and at the Kansas State Fair.

He added another award to his resume when his chili was voted the best among those entered in the senior center’s cook-off.

Bulla, who lives in Colwich, was not present at the competition, but his stepson, Jared Hill of Bentley, had brought a crock-pot full of the prize-winning recipe on his behalf.

“He’s been making chili since before I can remember,” Hill said. At least 25 years, he added.

Bulla has a number of chili recipes, both red and green, according to Hill, whose favorite is a green chili recipe that uses a full pork loin.
