SEDGWICK—It took 12 rounds and 90 minutes to crown the champion speller last Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the R.L. Wright Spelling Bee. With four contestants each from grades three through eight, 24 hopefuls took the stage in front of classmates, teachers and family.

There were even two sets of siblings in this year’s contest including fifth-grader Cory Culp and his older brother, eighth-grader Sam Culp. There were also the Stimpsons: Andrea from the eighth grade and Corbin from sixth grade.

One alternate, Noah Foster-Little had to compete when fourth-grader Austin Stang became ill.

The group was given easy words such as “coin” or “apple” in the first round. Then the words became more difficult in each consecutive round.

Finally, it was down to two seventh-graders, Abby Garrett and Scott Recheck. Those two went back and forth three times before Recheck spelled one word correctly then the next to become the 2018 Champion. Recheck won spelling “anecdote” and “malign.”

Recheck will represent Sedgwick at the Harvey County Spelling Bee in Hesston on Feb. 7.
