HALSTEAD—It’s the season of giving, and so perhaps it’s no surprise that the Halstead Community Foundation—which facilitates charitable giving for Halstead residents—decided to get on board with Giving Tuesday for the first time this year.

Giving Tuesday is an international movement to promote charitable giving following the big shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

JaLayna Carmichael, executive director of the Halstead Community Foundation, was at Halstead Library on Tuesday afternoon for those wishing to donate. Several hours into the afternoon, she said the turnout had been slow but steady.

All the money raised on Giving Tuesday will go into the foundation’s Impact Fund, which supports present and future needs in the community.

Money donated through Dec. 31 will be matched by the Kansas Health Foundation.

“Anything that is unrestricted, if it goes to our Impact Fund, it’s matched 50 percent,” she said. “If they chose to give it to the restricted funds, it’s matched at 25 percent.”

The community foundation is also recollecting the coin collection jars it distributed in October. Two dozen of these jars were distributed, and Carmichael said those who didn’t have a chance to return their jars on Giving Tuesday could still do so.

Those who missed Giving Tuesday but still wish to donate may do so by visiting donate.centralkansascf.org, and under the Community Fund Catalog click on Halstead Community Foundation. They may also mail a check to the Halstead Community Foundation at PO Box 4, Halstead.

“There’s plenty of giving time left,” Carmichael said.
