BENTLEY—For years David Luna has been serving the Bentley community by frying up a big batch of his homemade tacos and serving them at the Bentley Eagle Senior Center once or twice a year.

But at the most recent “Dave’s Taco Night” last Saturday, Luna received a much bigger thank-you when he was presented with a homemade quilt in honor of his being a veteran.

Linda Becker had spent months making the quilt with some help from friends and had been planning to present it to Luna that night. Sadly, Becker passed away on Oct. 6 and didn’t have the opportunity to give it to him in person. Instead the quilt was presented by one of Becker’s sons, Dan Bliss, with help from Gary Phillips.

Luna said he was very surprised to receive the quilt and that Becker had always been a good friend to him.

“The first time her and I met, we really hit it off,” he said.

Luna served the United States during the Vietnam War. On one corner of the quilt was a patch with the message, “This quilt was lovingly designed and made by Linda Becker and friends to honor David Luna for his service to our country.”

Bliss said his mother received help from other community members to make the quilt and that they’d worked hard to keep it a secret. Making quilts for veterans was a passion of hers, he said.

“Mom tried to do a quilt a year for a veteran and give it to them for their valor,” Bliss said, adding this was the fourth time she’d done this.
