Oslimpians Wrap Up Fitness Challenge

Posted 3/8/2017

By Jared Janzen

HALSTEAD—Residents in Halstead have been on the move for the last two months. They’ve been exercising, lifting weights, doing yoga, drinking more water and eating nutritious meals. This burst of healthy lifestyle choices has all been part of the first annual Oslimpics, organized by the Kansas Learning Center for Health.

The eight-week competition, which started in early January, wrapped up on Monday with the final weigh-in for participants. The program had 34 four-person teams enrolled, plus two individuals, making a grand total of 138 participants.

Diana Schutte, coordinator of the Oslimpics, said a lot of participants had told her it was a rewarding experience. No matter what shape people were in at the start, they all had the common goal of trying to become healthier, whether by losing weight, building lean muscle or building healthy nutrition habits.

Oslimpians logged how many minutes of exercise they did each week, and they could also earn bonus minutes by completing various challenges. The top three teams were reimbursed for their registration fee, plus the each member of the first-place team received $100.

The overall team winner was Hustle4Muscle, made up of members Jamie Lonnberg, Candace Ruff, Denise Schroeder and Jennifer Shiew, all of Jetmore.

Claiming second place was the Waddlers, with members being Melanie Beckett, Kari Heimerman, Kristen Williams and Renee Ediger.

Coming in third was BAMS, made up of Paula Detweiler, Trish King, Lesa Albin and Michelle Phipps.

The individual who lost the most weight was Xannie Quiring from Code Lean, the Halstead Fire/EMS team.
