Posted 3/30/2017

By Jared Janzen

HALSTEAD—Everyone in the community is invited to come out to Halstead Middle School from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14 for a community family fun night that will feature a wide variety of fun activities.

The event is free for all ages, but donations are welcome. Proceeds go toward the Dragon Kids summer program.

Kid should sign in to receive a wristband, which will allow them to take part in all the activities.

Kids will have many fun activities to choose from, such as face painting, a bouncy obstacle course, contests in coloring, free throw shooting, long jump and Legos, a bike rodeo (bring your own bike), touch-a-truck and a smoke house by Halstead Fire Department.

The Harvey County Health Department is donating bike helmets and locks to kids who take part in the bike rodeo.

Other activities for all ages are a silent auction that will feature Dragon sports memorabilia and clothing, various gift certificates and a piece of art by high school art instructor James Caldwell and much more.

There will also be a bake sale, ice cream, sno cones and an appearance by Newton’s K-9 unit. BBQ pulled pork meals will be sold for $6 and nacho meals for $5.

This is the fundraiser’s first year, but Mary Wilson, who leads the Dragon Kids program, said she expects it to become an annual occurrence.

“It started out as a real small project, and it just blossomed,” Wilson said. The fundraiser idea originated among the parents of kids who take part in the Dragon Kids program.
