BURRTON—Burrton’s new EMS director is one who is already familiar with the community and the EMS department.

Cherie King, who has lived in Burrton for 30 years and volunteered with EMS for 17, was hired last week for the position.

King said she decided to do it because the need was there and she thought she could give it a try.

“It needed to be done,” she said. “I’d rather keep it here with somebody that knows what goes on with our department.”

King has EMT certification and has volunteered with Burrton’s EMS department since 2000.

“It just makes more sense to hire somebody that everybody already knows,” King said. “I think it’ll be easier. Everybody’s willing to help and do whatever they need to do.”

King was hired during the fire district’s board meeting last Tuesday, and she had her first day on the job two days later on June 1. She will be working 15-20 office hours per week in addition to the hours she is on-call.

Her job description is still being worked out, but responsibilities will include overseeing scheduling, filing reports, coordinating training classes and managing billing. King has already been coordinating volunteer schedules for the past three months.

She said she expects to attend workshops this year to receive more training in her new responsibilities.
