HALSTEAD—City staff is back at full-strength in Halstead now that a new city clerk has been hired. Jamie Eberly was appointed to the position during the June 12 city council meeting and has been on the job for about two weeks now.

Eberly said her interest in becoming a city clerk stemmed from a desire for a job that more directly uses her college degree. She’s a Wichita native and studied marketing and accounting at Wichita State University. Her previous job was working in human resources and accounting at Kroger in Hutchinson.

“With Kroger I was more on the human resources and accounting side, so I wanted to get more into strictly being able to do more of what my degree was in,” she said.

She said she’s looking forward to working in the accounting system and having a larger role in working with the budget. She also said she’ll also enjoy helping the public in her new role.

“It’s a good way of meeting people,” she said.

Her first few weeks as clerk have been focused on training.

“I’ve been learning more of the cashiering right now so that I can get more familiar with that aspect,” she said.

Eberly’s husband, Sam, is the superintendent at Wedgewood Golf Course, a position he’s held since March 2016. With husband and wife both now working for the city, some of the clerk duties regarding the golf course were reassigned to other people.

“There’s some things that I’ll handle for the golf course, but we have delegated others as well,” she said.

The Eberlys have lived in Halstead since last June and have a nine-month-old son named Wyatt.
