BENTLEY—Tuesday morning, a couple of Bentley residents set out to make their city look a little more beautiful.

They were part of a group from the Bentley Senior Center that picks up litter around town once a year in honor of World Environment Day.

This year’s participants, Bessie Black and Millie Rosenberger, said in years past they’ve had a bigger group and that people probably hadn’t remembered this time.

“I just love the environment,” Black said. That love for nature became clear as she identified different types of plants and wildflowers while cleaning up litter.

The two of them circled around the perimeter of the senior center and cleaned up trash around the trees and tall grass. In about 25 minutes they filled two large trash bags and restored the area to its beautiful natural state.

The annual litter cleanup is one a number of programs the senior center does to qualify for funding from Sedgwick County.
