Farmer Ruptures Bentley's Main Gas Line

BENTLEY – A farmer using a disc to turn over his field accidentally nicked the main gas service line that feeds the town of Bentley late Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10, causing a major outage.

Kansas Gas Service Manager of Communications Dawn Tripp said, “We were notified about 6 p.m. of a third party damage to a Southern Star Gas line that feeds the City of Bentley.”

The gas in town was turned off to the main line and kept residents out of gas service through the night.  Gas had to be turned off at each home and business. City Hall was set up as a shelter for anyone needing to keep warm throughout the night. Red Cross Disaster Team brought in bottled water, coffee, and snacks.

City personnel along with police and fire crews set up a command post at city hall. Kevin Canada and Dan Bliss manned phones during the night at City Hall. “We notified media outlets and social media to let everyone know what was happening,” Canada said.

Across the hall in the conference room, employees of Kansas Gas Service set up their command post. A recovery plan was put in place.

“We wanted to make sure the elderly and those disabled residents were served first,” Canada said. “Businesses and Bentley Primary (School) were top priorities as well.”

City Hall was set up as a shelter for anyone needing to keep warm throughout the night. The Red Cross Disaster Team brought in bottled water, coffee, and snacks.

Tanker trucks were brought in first thing Wednesday morning to provide a gas feed to Bentley Primary School so it could stay heated and open for students and staff. Another tanker served the Bentley Corner Café so it could open and serve breakfast.

Around 30 Kansas Gas Service employees were brought in to help get gas turned back on to homes.  At the KGS command station, paper turn-on tickets were made for each customer. Technicians would come in, get something to drink or get a bite to eat before heading out with a handful of tickets.
