They were the first in recent memory to qualify for the state debate meet. They have qualified several entries to the state forensics meet.

Now, for the first time, they have qualified a student to a national tournament.

Kenzie Galloway qualified for the National Catholic Forensics League Grand National Tournament in student congress by finishing in second place in the national qualifier March 28.

The national tournament takes place May 27-28 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“It’s an honor to be the first Halstead High School student to go to Nationals,” Galloway said. “I’m so excited to be able to represent my school.”

Student congress is an event in which students from different schools simulate a session of the U.S. Congress.

Halstead, amid other schools, submitted two pieces of legislation. One formally recognizes the nation of Palestine. The other regulates online fantasy sports.

Students are tasked with organizing the legislation, selecting a presiding officer and debating them formally using Robert’s Rules of Order.
